Our series of “In Conversation with” interviews aims to provide the opportunity for you to hear from a wide range of influential leaders from health and beyond about their leadership journeys. 

Anthony (Mac) McKeever, who has just retired as the CEO for the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care Board was in conversation with us on 24 January.  Mac has led in a wide variety of senior leadership roles across the public sector over nearly five decades, serving 24 Secretaries of State, 11 Prime Ministers and 9 National CEO’s of the Health Service.  He is probably best known for his track record delivering turnarounds and ‘missions impossible’ as well as his understanding and leadership of health and social care systems.

Anthony McKeever

Mac’s early career was spent in the ‘fast stream’ at the Department of Health, where he became Secretary to the first NHS Management Board. He joined the Board at Mersey RHA in 1987, before leading a national Taskforce charged with eliminating waiting times of 2 years and more.  Having secured operations for 42,000 such patients nationally in just 80 working days, Mac was appointed to his first CEO role in 1993. Over the next 30 years he fulfilled similar leadership roles turning round performance at both hospitals and commissioning organizations. He served on the NHS Future Forum in 2010, eventually retiring from the NHS as CEO at Mid & South Essex ICB in November 2023.
